Health and disability providers face significant challenges to recruit and retain a suitably qualified and experienced workforce. In 2013 the WHO Global Health Observatory predicted that by 2035 the world will be short of 12.9 million health care workers. In 2013 that figure was 7.2 million.

Forecasting workforce demand is complex. HealthShare collaborates with other shared service agencies, District Health Boards, primary sector providers, and the Ministry of Health to support efforts to determine numbers.

Midland Workforce Planning and Development is funded by Health Workforce New Zealand and Midland District Health Boards. It works to:

  • access and monitor workforce data and information to support workforce planning and development;
  • develop and implement (or support implementation of) the workforce section of the Midland Regional Services Plan. Initiatives are outlined in the Midland Regional Services Plan;
  • increase regional and national collaboration to improve workforce planning and development;
  • maintain the collective knowledge of significant workforce planning and development activities, both across the Midland region and nationally; and
  • support and implement workforce planning and development initiatives that are not included in the Midland Regional Services Plan, but that support improvement in the area of workforce planning and development..
