Living and ageing well in Te Manawa Taki
New Zealand’s population is ageing and a substantial increase in the number of older people is expected over the next decade.
The Ministry of Health’s Healthy Ageing Strategy (2016) provides a clear direction for the health of New Zealand’s older people. The strategy urges the health sector to plan for the expected increase in the number of older people and ensure it is prepared at national, regional and local levels.
Representatives from Te Manawa Taki are working collaboratively to implement the strategy with a focus on:
- sharing initiatives and best practice for managing acute demand and patient flow across the continuum for the health of older people;
- access to education programmes, advice and support for family and whānau supporters of older people with dementia;
- promoting the use and application of InterRAI (a suite of clinical assessment instruments) data; and
- providing support to enable the Midland region to meet the requirements of the national Advance Care Planning Strategy.
